Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

La Notte dei Musei

written by Young in Rome May 11, 2011

If you haven’t noticed, one of our favorite things here at YiR is the plethora of free museum days and/or nights.  From the Notte di Tricolore and Unification Day back in March, to April’s Culture Week and monthly sunset beers at the Castel Sant’Angelo on Martedi in Arte, it seems like almost everything is open gratis at some point.  Adding to this honorable tradition is the 2011 edition of La Notte dei Musei, coming to Rome (and quite a few other cities) this Saturday, May 14th.  And, even better, the MAXXI is participating, along with perrenial favorites MACRO, Capitoline Museums, Centrale Montemartini, Galleria Borghese, Palazzo Barberini, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Scuderie del Quirinale (dying to see the Lotto exhibit!), Castel Sant’Angelo, Galleria Nazionale Arte Moderna and all other state museums, civic museums, libraries, municipal, private museums, academies and foreign cultural institutions, the University La Sapienza, and assorted other cultural institutions.

Of course, it’s even better this time around because the free openings start at 8pm and run all the way until 2am on Sunday (last entries are at 1am).  Stay tuned for our picks and recommended agenda later this week.

What: Night of the Museums
Where: Everywhere you’ve always wanted to go
When: Saturday, May 14th 8pm
How much: Peroni’s for the road usually start around €1.30, depending on your alimentari of choice.  But be careful on the new, stricter open container laws in some areas

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
