Open late, this Saturday only!
UPDATE: As of May 5, 2012, the Colosseum is once again offering evening tours on Friday and Saturday evenings, all the way through October. The Nerone show mentioned below is no longer on display, but you can book a tour to include the subterranean excavations.
For the last few weeks, the Colosseum has extended its Saturday hours, reopening from 8pm all the way until midnight. But for now, this Saturday, September 17th is your last chance to wander around that colossal structure under the stars. What better way to spend a Saturday evening than wandering around the building formerly known as the Flavian Amphitheatre? As an added bonus, your entrance includes access to the Nerone show on the second floor, and the popular Colosseum underground tours are running that night as well. You do need to call ahead to reserve a spot for the tour (+39.06.39967700), but otherwise, it seems to be first come first served to check out the sites and learn more about crazy (or awesome) Emperor Nero. Whether or not you want to find a quiet corner in which to enjoy that laptop you snuck in preloaded with “Gladiator” is up to you.
What: Saturday night at the Colosseum
Where: The Colosseum. That big roundish thing down on Via Fori Imperiali. Across from the Colosseo stop on the Metro B, and quite a few bus stops.
When: Saturday, September 17th from 8:20-midnight, last entrance at 10:45
Why: The Colosseum at night is probably my favorite site in Rome. Just imagine being inside!!!

[…] Starting at 8pm on Saturday night, the participating sites will reopen until 2am on Sunday (last entrances will be around 1:30). Check the website for a full list of participating sites and times (scroll down to Lazio), but take note that some highlights include the Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana out at Tivoli, and Castel Sant’Angelo, the Terme di Caracalla, and the Villa Giulia here in Rome, along with most other museums. The Galleria Borghese is participating as well, but be sure to call ahead to reserve your free 9pm entry.
