Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend in Rome: November 25-November 27

written by Young in Rome November 25, 2011

Friday: Work off your turkey hangover by shaking it to the tunes of Tonino Carotone tonight at Circolo degli Artisti. According to Wikipedia, this Spanish singer-songwriter first visited Italy in the 90’s in order to avoid Spanish military service, confirming a life-long love of Italian music. According to me, he’s got a sweet ‘stache and some hilarious looking clips on YouTube. For 10 euro, head on out to Pigneto and catch this cult singer in action as he continues his European tour, following a recent swing through South America with Manu Chao.

Saturday: Italian blues man Roberto Ciotti takes the stage at Trastevere jazz club Big Mama this Saturday night. His low-key soul is a perfect match for the underground (literally) vibe and extensive cocktail list. Call ahead for a table, but if not, swing by at 10pm when they release all the tables reserved by no-shows. Worth the effort if only for his Van Morrison covers.

Sunday: Pope Benedict continues his monthly tradition of throwing open the Vatican Museum doors free of charge on the last Sunday of every month. It’s anybody’s guess as to when the line will be shortest, but closest to the 1pm last admission is generally best. Afterwards, check out the final day of Peter Brook’s Magic Flute by Mozart at the RomaEuropa Festival.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
