Time to dust off your menorahs and dreidels, because Chanukah is fast approaching! The candle-filled Jewish holiday, lasting 8 nights, begins at sunset on Tuesday December 20th.
Also known as Hannukah, or the Festival of Lights, or when my dad used to give me $20, this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE, following victory over the Greeks.
If you don’t have your own menorah, or a 9-branched Chanukah candelabra, head over to Piazza Barberini every night at 6 PM, from the 20th-28th. There, the Jewish community of Rome lights up one large menorah on our behalf. To get a sneak peak of what this nightly event looks like, take a look at this YouTube video.
In addition to nightly candle-lighting (Friday and Saturday at 3 Pm and 730 PM respectively, due to the Sabbath), there will be a large event in the piazza on December 25th. The event will include dancing, traditional goodies, and gifts for the young ‘uns, all starting at 5 PM.
Check out the flyer, in Italian, for more info on the events in Piazza Barberini.
I have been told by a Roman Jewish insider that there should be another event taking place on December 24th. Unfortunately, complications with the po-po have left this event without a concrete location for the time being. So check back with us in a few days for more details!
Happy Holidays! Chag Sameach!
