Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend in Rome: January 13 – January 15

written by Young in Rome January 13, 2012

Friday: If you’ve already made it to the Damien Hirst show at Gagosian and you’re tHirsty for more (sorry), head up to Fondazione Pastificio Cerere this evening from 6:30 to 9:30 for the opening of their second “Postcard from…” installation, this one presented in conjunction with the Gagosian show and featuring none other than Mr. Hirst himself. Of course, if this isn’t your scene, you can always dance your face off at one of these spots.

Saturday: Shepard Fairey, the American street artist best known for the Obama campaign’s “Hope” poster, opens a new show at Mondo Bizarro tonight.  Over 100 of Fairey’s screen prints, stencils and collages will be on display. Mondo Bizarro is located off the Via Nomentana at

Via Reggio Emilia 32.  It is open Monday-Saturday from noon-8, and Sundays from 4-8.  If you’re looking to balance out the contemporary art with a little retro music, head down to Trastevere’s Big Mama Jazz Club for a night with the Riding Sixties – Rome’s premiere Beatles and Stones cover band. I’m not even joking. They’re awesome. Big Mama is at Vicolo San Francesco a Ripa 16, and the show usually starts around 10:30.

Sunday: After a Yuletide closure, one of Young in Rome’s fave markets reopens this weekend. The Farmer’s Market at Circo Massimo is back starting this weekend, open every Saturdays from 10-6 and Sundays from 10-4. Head down to Via San Teodoro 74 this weekend for a selection of fresh produce, meats, wines, oils, beers, and more, all grown or made in Rome’s own region of Lazio.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
