Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend in Rome: January 20 – January 22

written by Young in Rome January 20, 2012

Friday: A retrospective of famed French photographer and “father of photojournalism” Henri Cartier-Bresson opens today at Palazzo Incontro.  The show runs through May 6th and provides a nice complement to modern photojournalist Steve McCurry’s show down at MACRO Testaccio. Palazzo Incontro is located near the Palazzo Parlamento at Via dei Prefetti 22, and is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9am-9pm.  Later this evening, Stefano Carboni and the Brand New Band take the stage at Fonclea in Prati for a night of R&B and boogie-woogie in tribute to such greats as Muddy Waters, BB King, Otis Redding, and Wilson Pickett. Fonclea is on Via Crescenzio near Piazza Risorgimento. Concerts start at 9:30 at cost 7 euro.

Saturday: Need a little magic in your life? Head up to Teatro Olimpico this weekend for the 9th Annual Supermagic Festival. This year’s theme is Enchantment, and the daily shows from now until January 29th feature some of Europe’s top magical entertainers.  Check out Buzz in Rome’s write-up for more info, or click here to buy tickets for the 4:30 matinee or 9:00pm show.  Tickets start at 17 euro.

Sunday: Yearning for a little taste of the States? Maybe some good old-fashioned American football set to a Journey/Don McClean/Miley Cyrus soundtrack? Well the NFL conference championships are this weekend, and good old neighborhood standby Scholars Lounge will be showing the games. The Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots kick-off at 9:00pm, to be followed by the bi-coastal San Francisco 49ers/New York Giants showdown at midnight. Sunday is karaoke night in the back room at Scholars, so get there a little ahead of time to secure a seat by the big screen in the front room. Unless of course you prefer watching your football as someone screech/mumbles Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me” on the stage behind you.  Scholars is located near Piazza Venezia at Via del Plebescito 101, but come on, you already knew that.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
