Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

Baby It’s Cold Outside…

written by Maddie DeWitt February 3, 2012

This, my friends, is what is called a "wintry mix"

With the skies a-darkening and the temperatures a-dropping this weekend, it looks like we might be kissing our “Dear God is it really January with skies like this?”-weather goodbye…at least for now.  But since the snow is already falling, let’s see where we can cozy up inside…

Personally, nothing warms the cockles of my heart quite like a steaming mug of hot chocolate, and I have it on very good authority that the variety on offer at the Caffe Farnese is one of the best in the city. Located on the corner of Piazza Farnese and just steps from Campo de’ Fiori, duck into this classic spot for an afternoon sweet treat (and maybe stop at Forno Campo de’ Fiori for some pizza bianca on your way in…)

Of course, if you still want the warmth, but maybe not the dairy, a bar/caffe/tea house with a list of teas about 20 strong might be more your…cup of tea? Art Studio Cafe, on Via dei Gracchi in Prati, offers just that – along with a tasty aperitivo and, in case you’re looking for some arts and crafts – a mosaic studio next door.

Since every time I enter Etabli (Vicolo delle Vacche 9), I feel like I’m entering a rustic country lodge in New York’s Hudson Valley (yes, I realize that is rather specific, but there’s something about the reclaimed wood, and whatnot that just makes me think of it), and, since there’s nowhere I’d rather be on a cold winter’s night than in a rustic country lodge (preferably with snow piling outside), I’m gonna go ahead and list it as one of the cozier spots in the city. Plus, they’ve got a fireplace! Great spot for aperitivo or dinner, and a welcome relief from the chaos of nearby Navona.

Of course, if you’re just a glutton for punishment, take advantage of that snowy Sunday forecast, and join us for some snow football in anticipation of the Super Bowl!

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
