This Weekend in Rome: February 24-26

Friday: Guggenheim Collection: The American Avant Garde opened at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni earlier this month, with a lineup drawn from New York’s roller skate-friendly* Guggenheim Museum. In conjunction with this exhibit, which examines American art from 1945-1980 with pieces by Warhol, de Kooning, Stella, Pollock, and Lichtenstein, among others, the Palazzo is hosting Ciao America!, a corresponding film series starting this weekend. Tonight at 9pm, head over to Via Nazionale for a screening of John Cassavetes’ debut film “Shadows”. Admission is 4 euro. The Guggenheim show runs until May 6th, and admission is 12.50

Saturday: If you artistic tastes run a little less American avant garde and a little more 16th Century epic Venetian, then the Scuderie di Quirinale has heard your cries. Following the closure last month of the well-received Lippi and Botticelli retrospective, this Saturday the Scuderie opens the first major, dedicated exhibition since the 1930’s of the dramatic, forceful canvases by Jacopo Robusti, or, as his friends call him, Tintoretto. The show runs until June 10th, and tickets are 10.  However, if this Saturday finds you more in the mood to buy than admire, hit up the special Saturday edition of Mercato Monti. The market is open from 10am to 8pm at Via Leonina 46, and features a funky collection of vendors hawking their handmade wares – shoes, purses, clothing, jewelry, and so much more.

Sunday: This Sunday is the last day to catch Carsten Holler’s massive, zebra-ish installation up at the MACRO on Via Nizza. The piece, “Double Carousel with Zollner Stripes”, is the fifth winner of the ENEL Contemporanea Prize, an annual, international competition of contemporary art designed around an energy theme. The museum is open until 7pm tomorrow, and admission is free. This Sunday is also the post-Lent Carnevalone Liberato outside the city in Poggio Mirteto. Read our other post for more info.
