Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend in Rome: March 9-11

written by Young in Rome March 9, 2012

Friday: The Ciao America! film series continues tonight at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni with a screening of Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper’s 1969 directorial debut.  The movie starts at 9 and admission is 4 euro, which is a totally reasonable price for an hour and a half of a young Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, and, yes Phil Spector. Also at 9 tonight, the Berlin Philharmonic is playing the first installment of a two-night stint up at the American Academy’s Villa Aurelia. The ensemble will be performing pieces written by fellows of the Academy, as well as a selection of tunes by Dvořák, Prokofiev, Schreker, and von Weber.  Tickets are free, but space is limited, so get there early!

Saturday: This Saturday is your last chance to see Damien Hirst’s Spots at the Gagosian Gallery.  If you’ve already been over there, but are still in the mood for some art and/or melting clocks, check out the Salvadaor Dali show opening today at the Complesso del Vittoriano. Later Saturday night, you can head back up to the Villa Aurelia for the second night of the Berlin Philharmonic’s free series, or get yourself over to Prati to see former YiR interviewee Miss Tess perform along with her trio, the Yellow Cabbies at Sabor Sapiens.  Both shows start at 9

Sunday: So we may have already mentioned this, but there’s kind of a whisky festival going on this weekend, and we’re kind of excited about it. The Spirit of Scotland Festival of Whisky continues on Sunday (Day 1 is Saturday), with top scotch purveyors offering samples in the Aranciera di San Sisto from 11-7.  Entrance is 7 euro and includes a glass and tasting token.  To fortify yourself for the festival, indulge in a Tex-Mex Brunch at Les Affiches, the latest in their series of Sunday American Brunches.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
