Friday: Underground jazz club and perennial Young in Rome favorite Big Mama is putting on another of their vaunted tribute nights this evening, as Eric Clapton cover band “Just One Night” takes the subterranean stage. As always, an annual membership costs 15 euro, but more than pays for itself in just a few shows. Visit the website to reserve a table, or show up at 10 and try your luck. The show starts at 10:30, and usually runs until just After Midnight.
Saturday: Starting this weekend, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere is hosting an exhibition of the best photos from this year’s World Press Photo competition. From now until May 20th, you can see the most stunning and moving editorial images from the last year on display at this museum in Piazza di Sant’Egidio. While there, be sure to check out the Leonard Freed photography exhibit of Italian quotidian life. The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10-8, and entrance is 6.50.
Sunday: Two of this spring’s most popular shows – Guercino in the Palazzo Barberini’s new exhibition space, and the Steve McCurry retrospective at the MACRO Pelanda, are both set to close this Sunday. And while I don’t anticipate this one closing up shop any time soon, Sunday’s also a good day to visit the Vatican Museums, for it’s monthly “last Sunday” free entrance. Of course the lines will be long, and the sun will be hot, so you might be better off casting culture aside this weekend and hitting the beach.
