Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend in Rome: July 6 – July 9

written by Young in Rome July 6, 2012

Friday: Expand your acoustic and physical horizons a bit this evening, and head out to Forte Prenestino for the Nolebol Fest.  Tonight and tomorrow night, this abandoned fort, which has been reappropriated as a pretty much anything goes concert venue/outdoor hang out, will be hosting 40 talented but as yet unsigned bands.  Catch a tram or bus out to Prenestino/Centocelle (use ATAC to find the best route), and be sure to wear shoes that can handle a bit of dirt and grime.  Stick a little closer to home with “Hot Summer Nights”, Roma Vintage’s weekly R&B and soul vinyl dance party – every Friday at 11. Entrance is free and fun is compulsory.

Saturday: For some free jazz, head down to the piazza in front of San Pietro in Vincoli and La Sapienza at 7:30 for a performance by Polyband di Zurigo. You could even get there early and check out Michelangelo’s Moses inside San Pietro. Your call.  Saturday is also the opening day of Rome’s summer Fashion Week.  Events run from Saturday through Wednesday, and check out the calendar to see what’s going on (anything not designated as “by invitation only” is fair game!)

Sunday:  Since every weekend must include at least one air-conditioned option, may we humbly suggest the Palazzo delle Esposizioni for the final day of Arturo Ghergo’s black and white photography show.  The massive show – it features over 250 photographs – displays the Italian innovator’s work from the mid-20th Century, and is rife with stunning photographs of movie stars (including Sofia Loren and Ingrid Bergman), lesser known actors, and countless others who took their place in front of the master’s lens.  Later on Sunday, Justice will take the stage at the Ippodromo delle Capannelle, but if you did not get tickets in time, don’t worry, be happy, and head up to the Auditorium Parco della Musica to listen to Bobby McFerrin live and in person. More info on tickets here.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
