It’s summer, and there are a ton of mosquitoes. In honor of these hellish insects, today’s post will be all things related to mosquitoes.
Zanzara: the Italian noun (f) for a mosquito. The plural is zanzare.
Example: ‘Maledetta zanzara!’ – Cursed mosquito!
Zanzariera: the Italian noun (f) for a window screen, or a panel that keeps insects out. The plural is zanzariere.
Example: ‘Perchè non mettono le zanzariere nelle loro finestre?!’ – Why don’t they put window screens on their windows? (They = Italians).
Prurito: the Italian noun (m) for an itch. The plural is pruriti.
Example: ‘Questo prurito non passa mai!’ – This itch never goes away!
Pruriginoso: the Italian adjective for itchy.
Example: ‘Quel tessuto è molto pruriginoso.’ – That fabric is very itchy.
Autan: the Italian bug spray that seems to work better than our well-known, OFF!
Example: ‘Ce ne sono tante zanzare. Mi passi l’Autan?’ – There are a ton of mosquitoes. Could you pass me the Autan?
