Under the bench the goat dies: Italian tongue twisters Part 1

If you really want an Italian language challenge, try these tongue twisters! If saying them out loud doesn’t make you laugh then the English translations definitely will. (The first one is my favorite.)

Sopra la panca la capra campa, sotto la panca la capra crepa.

On the bench, the goat lives, under the bench the goat dies.

Trentatré Trentini entrarono a Trento, tutti e trentatré, trotterellando.

Thirty three Trentonians came into Trent, all thirty-three trotting.

Il papá pesa al pepe a Pisa. A Pisa pesa il pepe al papá.

The father weighs the pepper in Pisa. In Pisa, the pepper is weighed by the father.

Apelle, figlio di Apollo, fece una palla di pelle di pollo. Tutti i pesci vennero a galla, per vedere la palla di pelle di pollo fatta da Apelle, figlio di Apollo.

Apelle, son of Apollo, made a ball of chicken skin. All the fishes came to the surface to see the ball of chicken skin made by Apelle, son of Apollo.

I leave to you the translation in English:

Se sei gnomi magnano sei gnocchi
con gli occhi, con gli occhi quanti gnocchi magna ogni gnomo?

Chi ama chiama chi ama, chiamami tu che chi ami chiami. Chi amo chiamo se tu non chiami.

Li vuoi quei kiwi?

Boh?
If 6 dwarfs with eyes bigger than their bellies eat 6 gnocchi,
how many gnocchi does each dwarf eat?

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
