It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes there isn’t an Italian equivalent for an English word, or sometimes there isn’t an Italian word that you would like to use in existence. And in my humble opinion, we should be able to create words as we see fit.
Today’s example, ‘to become freckled,’ or as I created, lentigginarsi.
(Why do I bring this up? Simply, it’s been super hot out, and I freckle in the sun, and I always thought there should be a verb for ‘freckling.’ Kind of like Maddie’s need to create blizzardino back when Rome was freaking out over the ‘snow.’)
Lentiggini (sing. lentiggine) is the Italian word for freckles. Therefore, lentigginnarsi is the Italian reflexive verb for ‘to become freckled.’ Conjugate it as you would any reflexive verb (mi lentiggino, ti lentiggini, si lentiggina…)
Interestingly, when I looked up the etymology of lentiggini, I found that they may have been derived from the Italian lenticchie, or lentils, both being small round discs of the same light brown/red color.
