One of our favorite traditions round these parts are the countless sagre throughout the year – town festivals generally dedicated to a particular local delicacy. This weekend, Nemi, a small town in the Alban Hills near Ariccia, is hosting the 78th edition of its annual Sagra delle Fragole – Festival of the Strawberries. While it might be a bit of a pain to get to, as far as the hill towns go (see below for instructions), we say it’s worth it to spend what looks to be a glorious Sunday afternoon frolicking in the countryside and indulging in fragoline distributed from “The Biggest Cup in the World”.
Where: Nemi, about 30 miles southeast of Rome
When: Festival festivities started last Friday and run through Sunday, June 12th, but the big show is this Sunday, June 5th, in the afternoon and evening
How: Hop on the Cotral bus to Genzano from the Anagnina stop on Metro A. These leave every 10-20 minutes throughout the day. In Genzano, you’ll need to change buses to continue on to Nemi. These leave about hourly, so plan accordingly, unless, of course, you don’t mind hanging around Genzano’s Piazza Frasconi, which, having never been there, we’re sure is lovely.
