Today’s daily photo is of the Arch of Constantine, because today marks exactly 1600 years, seven months, and nine days since Constantine I’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge, which the arch commemorates. Enjoy.
What: Arch of Constantine. This triumphal arch, erected in the 4th century, is actually decorated with parts nabbed from other, older monuments – which, when seen alongside the newer decorations telling of Constantine’s military campaigns, serves to evoke comparisons, or rather place him in the company of, the good old boys like Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius.
Where: Near some other old stuff. Located between the Colosseum and the Palatine.
How: Catch a glimpse walking down Fori Imperiali, or Via di San Gregorio, or while visiting the Colosseum or Forum. This photo is from Rome’s birthday, when the arch got the special light treatment in celebration.
