The Palestra at Ostia Antica - Open for free this weekend!
This weekend, in honor of European Heritage Days, Rome is throwing open the doors to all kinds of museums and historical sites…for free! European Heritage Days is a twenty-year old initiative, originally launched by the Council of Europe to unite citizens across cultural boundaries by providing access to new cultural assets and opening up those that aren’t always universally accessible. Events and special openings are taking place across Europe this month to highlight local art, artisans and architecture in an effort to raise cultural awareness and appreciation, encourage greater tolerance within and beyond Europe and to inform the public about protecting cultural heritage. Italy is celebrating this weekend with the theme “Italy – Treasure of Europe”. Events are going on across the country, and here in Rome the list of free sites, many with guided tours, is quite long, including the MACRO, which just opened a new Dash Snow show last night.
For an overview of state events and openings across Lazio, check out the brochure here. Be on the lookout for anything that says prenotazione and lists a phone number under the opening hours – you’ll need to call and make a reservation to see those sites.
