Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend: European Heritage Days

written by Young in Rome September 21, 2011

The Palestra at Ostia Antica - Open for free this weekend!

This weekend, in honor of European Heritage Days, Rome is throwing open the doors to all kinds of museums and historical sites…for free!  European Heritage Days is a twenty-year old initiative, originally launched by the Council of Europe to unite citizens across cultural boundaries by providing access to new cultural assets and opening up those that aren’t always universally accessible.  Events and special openings are taking place across Europe this month to highlight local art, artisans and architecture in an effort to raise cultural awareness and appreciation, encourage greater tolerance within and beyond Europe and to inform the public about protecting cultural heritage.  Italy is celebrating this weekend with the theme “Italy – Treasure of Europe”.  Events are going on across the country, and here in Rome the list of free sites, many with guided tours, is quite long, including the MACRO, which just opened a new Dash Snow show last night.

For an overview of state events and openings across Lazio, check out the brochure here.  Be on the lookout for anything that says prenotazione and lists a phone number under the opening hours – you’ll need to call and make a reservation to see those sites.

For a list (in English!) of free Rome municipal museums (including MACRO, Ara Pacis, and Trajan’s Markets), click here.

No information on whether Provincia di Roma sites are participating, so if you happen to know, leave it in the comments!

What:  Free museums and cultural events across the country for European Heritage Days
Where: Pretty much every site you’ve been wanting to visit in Rome
When: Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25
Why: Why not?

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
