Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

Music in the Museums

written by Young in Rome November 17, 2011

What's normally just a really Great Hemicycle turns into Trajan's Market - The Concert Venue this weekend

In the last few months we’ve seen Night at the Museum, Free Evening at the Museum, Free Day at the Museum, Free Day at Just the Contemporary Museums, and a host of other museum-related activities in Rome’s finest cultural institutions. This weekend, one more gets added to mix when Musei in Musica (Music in the Museums) is unleashed upon the masses this Saturday night. Rome’s Musei in Comune (a category which includes the Capitoline Museums, Ara Pacis, Centrale Montemartini, Trajan’s Markets and quite a few others listed here) are converting themselves into concert venues for the evening. There are more than 60 free gigs taking place across the city in museums and other cultural spaces, including two events celebrating the relationship between music and film.

A full program is available here, although early favorites include Dixieland in Rome at the Palazzo Barberini (no word on if they’re handing out Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade passes #shamelessseinfeldreference), the music of Cole Porter at Centrale Montemartini, a Flamenco performance at the Instituto Cervantes in Piazza Navona, and an electronic music show at the newly reopened Gallery of Modern Art.  Events are free and start at 8pm, but check the schedule for specific timing by venue.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
