Toccata and Fuga: Live Opera in the Piazza

written by Young in Rome December 12, 2011

Opera for the people in the people's plaza

If you happened to be wandering through Piazza del Popolo on Thursday evening, you may have caught the catchy melody of “La Donna è Mobile” from Verdi’s Rigoletto (along with several other arias I couldn’t immediately identify). And since Opera in the Piazza, while awesome, isn’t a regular thing, I bet you were also wandering what the Figaro was going on. Turns out it was the opening night of the winter installment of Toccata & Fuga– a nice little initiative to bring some music to the people. If you didn’t catch the divas and divos on Thursday evening, they will be bringing the show to Piazza di Spagna at 5:30pm every Monday evening from now until January 2nd. So head on over to the Spanish Steps to get a prime view and listen of some classic opera tunes. In case of rain, the show will relocate to Galleria Alberto Sordi on Via del Corso.

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
