Which Way to Rome

the magic of getting lost but finding home wherever you are

This Weekend in Rome: June 1 – June 3

written by Young in Rome June 1, 2012

Friday: As threatened earlier this week, Vinoforum opens tonight.  Prepare yourself for 16 days of evening wine tastings al fresco and along the river.   Check out our full post for times and prices of the whole festival, but note that tonight doors open at 7, and it’s 20 euro for 12 tastings.  This evening, you can also chase your wine with a dose of live music in the Villa Medici, with the second night of the Villa Aperta festival.  Tonight’s program, kicking off at 9, features Michel Cloup, Teho Teardo & Wire. Tickets are 15 euro.

Saturday: June 2, 1946.  The war is over, fascism has failed, and Italy needs to decide what’s next.  An institutional referendum held by universal suffrage is called, and Italy votes to transition from a monarchy into a republic.  66 years later, we’re still celebrating June 2 as the Festa della Repubblica, with a military parade down the Via dei Fori Imperali and, from 3pm-7pm on Saturday, free visits to the gorgeous Quirinal Gardens (the Palazzo del Quirinale is the official residence of the Italian President. Free Peroni to whoever names him first in the comments).

Sunday: The Roma International Air Show wraps up its three days this Sunday with an all-day expo and flyover out at Ostia.  Grab a spot on the beach to watch the Frecce Tricolori (basically, Italy’s Blue Angels) perform some aerial acrobatics alongside other Italian teams from the Navy, Guardia di Finanza, Carabinieri, and some international representatives from Belgium and France.  Starting at 10 every day of the air show (June 1-3), you can visit the expo at Piazza Sirio in Lido di Ostia, which includes, yes, flight simulators.  But just make sure you’re out there by 1:15 on Sunday when the good stuff takes off (literally).

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
