Cacio e Pepe: The best Carbonara in Rome

Cacio e Pepe: The best Carbonara in Rome

Carbonara Insta

I know we instagrammed this earlier in the week but I thought this place deserves it’s own post. Spaghetti alla carbonara is a classic Roman dish. It’s a delectable blend of creamy, eggy, cheese sauce (pecorino or parmigiano) punctuated by crispy bacon bits and black pepper.

Cacio e Pepe serve this bowl of perfection in a casual jumble of tables set up on the side of the road. It’s a simple trattoria with a cheap daily menu written on a large square of brown paper by the door and I’d say utterly worth a visit.

Last time I was there I sat next to a man yelling at his son on the phone: “Come on, Giulio, how can you still be lost? You’re a “cretino”! You say: not ideal dining? I say: classic Roman lunch crowd.

***

Located on the corner of Via Giuseppe Avezzana and Via Luigi Settembrini (Closest metro is Lepanto on the Line A)

Best time to go: Lunch while it’s still warm out! Get there a bit early for Italian standards (so, about noon) or you might have to wait in line to get a table!

My Story

A smidgen about me: growing up bouncing back and forth between Rome and Northern California, I eventually moved back to the Eternal City to finish college and then decided I liked gelato too much to move away again. Today I split my time between Tunis, where I work for an international organization, and wandering around my beloved Roma in constant search of bookstores and the perfect espresso. Read more…
